What a nature haven in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne! We had a delightful morning, marvelling at the birds, the trees and flowers, and all the sights and sounds this lovely walk has to offer.

During our quick visit to the Mallee last week, we spent a day at Murray-Sunset. More precisely, Pink Lakes. What a great place!
Spring has sprung so we decided a trip to the Mallee (and a maiden voyage for the Troopy) would be a great thing to do - and it was: here's what we found at Wyperfeld, Hattah-Kulkyne and Murray-Sunset National parks....until the rain stopped us.
As we headed south, we saw more parrots (yay!), but in addition to learning about birds, we'd like to learn more about their homes and food sources. In Charleville, we found two excellent (but rather unadvertised) places to learn about the trees of the outback: the Botanic Drive (fifteen kms out of town), and the Graham Andrews Parklands in town. In this post, we share some of what we learnt there.
Yep - budgies, red-tailed cockatoos, cockatiels and, well, flies! What great birding on the way to and out at Winton. Thanks to all the great rain (and not great for many people) the outback is brimming with birds. Here are some of the the fancy flocks we saw...
We went on our first birding tour - and to Cape York. Here is what we saw and experienced, and what we think of the idea of a bird tour...
And so to Queensland - and it's still pretty chilly, but no rain for the last few days. Our journey to Roma has included excellent botanic gardens, new lifer birds for us - including red-shouldered parrots - and just loving those wide open spaces!
rosalieArtist and nature lover Western Ringneck Parrots (locally called Twenty-eights because of their call) are still plentiful in Western Australia. Sadly, they are vilified because they damage fruit trees. We recently visited Western Australia -- mainly the Perth Hills and the south-west -- and spent some time observing and photographing these beautiful shy birds. Beverley captured a lovely sequence of a Twenty-eight sitting on a fence post, eating an olive and spitting out the pip, as you do! I used one of the photos as the basis for my drawing.
Three hours north of Melbourne, these wetlands did not disappoint...especially in the raptor department.
