ROSALIEI started drawing using coloured pencils and coloured paper, drawing animal portraits based on photos in books and calendars. The rights to such work rests with the photographer; however, it was a way for me to develop my observational skills and gain confidence in the medium. When I moved to Melbourne I had more time to explore books and internet resources on drawing and I attended classes with professional artists. I learnt about copyright issues as well as techniques such as colour mixing for more realistic results. I improved my drawing techniques moving between coloured pencil and graphite and adding water colour. I now base my drawings on my own photos, or I use Beverley Oliver’s photos (see Store).
I have learnt more about composition and how to make my two-dimensional art look three-dimensional by using tone, colour, colour temperature, saturation, transition and edges. I’m continually learning and adapting techniques to assist in telling a story and connecting the observer to the art. I have always been attracted to pets and wildlife as a subject for drawing, although recently I find myself attracted to drawing birds and botanicals. For me it feels like the subject I am drawing decides whether to emerge from the paper and it is a magical experience for me.
