WE'RE ON THE ROADOur big drive for 2022 is from Melbourne to the Iron Range in Cape York in far north Queensland - and today is pretty much our first day. We left a wet and cold Melbourne yesterday and made Cobram our first stop. This is a new town, for us, but we knew that visiting the Murray was a sure winner. We always love being around the Murray! Cobram is a lovely town, and like Echuca and Mildura, is close to lovely walking paths around the river. If you're keen on a hearty meal do visit the Cobram Hotel - where we had the largest serve of pork belly in Christendom. (It was tasty too!) We went to Quinns Island Wetland Sanctuary, traditional lands of the Yorta Yorta people, and had a pleasant 2.5km stroll around the circuit track. Even though there had been a deluge the previous evening, the sun came out for us and the day was fresh and crisp. The Murray was resplendent, of course! We were particularly pleased to have seen three koalas high in their trees - we are very concerned about the survival rates of these magnificent creatures, and seeing three was a real bonus. Birds were not particularly plentiful but we did enjoy seeing some red-browed finches, wrens, magpies, sulphur-crested cockatoos and - well spotted, Rosalie - a lovely Laughing Kookaburra. An easy start to our big adventure!
